Prepare Stems for Mixing: 5 Checks + Checklist

Prepare stems for mixing with clearly labeled audio files, organized folders, and a DAW session ready for a remote mix

A remote mixer should not have to guess where your files start, whether a reverb tail was cut, or what Audio_01_final_NEW.wav contains. A clean handoff preserves your production choices while giving the engineer enough control to mix.

Before you upload anything, run five checks: consolidation, clean starts, naming, tails, and grouping. Then rebuild the song from your exports. If it plays like your rough mix, the folder is ready to send.

Check 1: Consolidate Every Stem from the Same Timeline

Every exported file should start at the same point. Usually, that means the beginning of bar 1 or the session’s shared zero point.

Do this even when the instrument enters later. If the tambourine first appears in the final chorus, its file should still include silence from the shared start. Your mixer can then place every file at the beginning of a blank session without manually aligning regions.

Before changing anything, duplicate the session. Keep the original production session intact. Use the duplicate to remove unused material, prepare your exports, and test the delivery.

Then define one export range for the full song:

  1. Set the start at the session’s shared zero point.
  2. Set the end after the last audible tail.
  3. Use that same range for every file.
  4. Export without normalization.
  5. Keep the session’s native sample rate.

The recommended delivery format is WAV or AIFF at 24-bit or higher. Keep the same sample rate as the session, such as 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. These preparation steps follow the workflow described in this guide to preparing files for a mixing engineer.

Sending audio exports instead of a raw DAW session can also avoid software compatibility problems, missing plug-ins, and unavailable presets. The engineer receives audio that reflects what you heard, regardless of whether you produced in Logic, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, or another DAW.

Check 2: Make the Starts Clean Without Removing Musical Content

A common start point solves alignment. It does not guarantee a clean start.

Zoom in around bar 1 and inspect each exported source. Listen through headphones if possible. You are checking for anything that should not reach the mixer:

  • An accidental click from an edit
  • Room noise before a vocal take
  • A stray count-in
  • An unused pre-roll recording
  • A clipped first attack
  • A breath that belongs to another take
  • Muted or unused material that was exported by mistake

Remove unwanted noise, clicks, and silences. Delete muted or unused tracks from the preparation copy of the session. Keep the original session unchanged in case you need to recover something later.

Be careful with intentional lead-ins. A singer’s inhale may be part of the phrase. A reversed cymbal may begin before the downbeat. A guitar slide may lead into the first chord. “Clean” does not mean “silent at all costs.” It means that every audible event is intentional.

Use this DAW-neutral inspection pass:

  1. Solo the source or group.
  2. Start playback before its first musical entrance.
  3. Listen through the first attack.
  4. Check the waveform for abrupt edits.
  5. Confirm that intentional pre-roll audio remains.
  6. Repeat after export, not only inside the production session.

For example, imagine a vocal entering in bar 9. The exported file begins at bar 1, but the first eight bars should contain only clean silence. The breath immediately before the lyric stays if it supports the performance. The chair squeak several seconds earlier does not.

Your mixer should understand a file without opening it.

Names such as Lead_Vox, Drum_Snare, and Guitar_Rhythm are more useful than Audio_01 or Track 2, according to the same mix preparation guide.

For a detailed remote delivery, use a consistent structure:

Not every field must be complex. It must be consistent. Decide on one spelling for each group and keep it throughout the folder. Do not switch between Vox, Vocals, and Singers unless those labels describe different things.

Apply three rules:

  • Put the broad group first. This keeps drums, vocals, guitars, and synths together when files are sorted.
  • Label dry and wet files clearly. “Dry” means without the optional processing. “Wet” means the processing is printed.
  • Use revision numbers. Replace final, final2, and final_REAL with Rev01, Rev02, and Rev03.

Check 4: Preserve Tails, Effects, and the Creative Rough Mix

The export does not end when the last note is played. It ends when the last intended sound has finished.

Listen to the final bars of every stem. Check:

  • Reverb decays
  • Delay repeats
  • Instrument sustains
  • Vocal throws
  • Automated fades
  • Effect automation after the final note

Do not cut a reverb tail simply to make the file shorter. The exported range should extend far enough for the tail to finish naturally.

Next, separate creative processing from loudness processing.

Keep effects and automation that define the production. If a filtered vocal, distorted bass, or automated delay is part of the arrangement, removing it may erase the sound you approved. Preserve individual balances when the goal is to let the mixer raise the faders and recreate the rough mix.

Disable loudness limiters and other mastering plug-ins on the master bus when exporting files for mixing. Those processors belong to the overall stereo chain, not to the individual delivery files.

When you are unsure about an effect, export both options:

Include a short note explaining which version appears in the rough mix. Do not send unexplained alternatives and hope the mixer enjoys detective work.

Finally, preserve the approved stereo rough mix as a reference. It communicates the intended balances, panning, effects, and overall direction.

Check 5: Choose Grouped Stems Without Removing Mix Flexibility

A grouped stem is a rendered stereo file representing a section of the production, such as drums, vocals, or guitars. It differs from a multitrack, which is an individual track exported from the session.

For example:

is a grouped stem. These are individual multitracks:

Use grouped stems when the mixer is finishing an established rough mix and does not need to rebuild every internal balance. They make the session simpler.

Send individual parts when the engineer may need more control. Synth layers, backing vocals, strings, and other stacked elements can become difficult to rebalance once they are locked into one stereo group. A practical decision rule is:

  • Send the group when its internal balance is approved and should remain intact.
  • Send individual parts when the mixer may need to adjust tone, level, or placement within the group.
  • Send both when you are uncertain, with unmistakable labels.
  • Ask the mixer which layout they prefer before exporting a large session.

If you provide both a grouped stem and its component tracks, place them in separate folders. Make it clear that they are alternatives, not files that should all play together.

Send-Ready Checklist: Verify, Package, and Confirm Delivery

Copy this checklist into your project notes:

SESSION
[ ] I duplicated the session and preserved the original.
[ ] I removed muted or unused tracks from the preparation copy.
[ ] Every export uses the same full-song timeline.
[ ] Every file begins at the same zero point.
[ ] Every file ends after the final intended tail.

CLEANUP
[ ] Starts are free of accidental noise, clicks, and stray count-ins.
[ ] Intentional breaths, attacks, pre-rolls, and lead-ins remain.
[ ] Reverb tails, delays, sustains, and fades are complete.

NAMES AND VERSIONS
[ ] Every filename identifies the song, group, and source.
[ ] Dry and wet alternatives are labeled clearly.
[ ] Revision numbers use one consistent format.
[ ] No file is named Audio_01, Track 2, final_NEW, or similar.

PROCESSING
[ ] Essential effects and sound-shaping automation are preserved.
[ ] Individual balances still reproduce the intended rough mix.
[ ] Loudness limiting and mastering plug-ins are off the master bus.
[ ] Grouped and individual alternatives are separated and labeled.

FORMAT AND LEVEL
[ ] Files are WAV or AIFF.
[ ] Files are 24-bit or higher.
[ ] Files use the session’s native sample rate.
[ ] Normalization is off.
[ ] The loudest section reaches approximately -3 to -6 dBFS on the
    master channel without clipping.

VERIFICATION
[ ] I imported every file into a blank session.
[ ] Every file was placed at the shared zero point.
[ ] The combined files match the original stereo rough mix, except
    for the removed master-bus limiting.
[ ] I listened to the first and final bars after reimporting.

DELIVERY
[ ] The main folder uses the song title.
[ ] Subfolders separate grouped stems, multitracks, and alternatives.
[ ] The stereo rough mix is included.
[ ] The package has been compressed.
[ ] The package will be transferred securely.
[ ] I asked the mixer to confirm receipt.

Reimporting the files into a blank session is the final pass-or-fail test. Their sum should match the original stereo rough mix, apart from the master-bus limiting you disabled. If something disappears, doubles, starts late, or ends early, fix the export before sending it.
