Mixing vs Mastering: Follow One Song to the Final Master¶

Mixing shapes the relationships inside a song. Mastering finalizes the completed mix for release. That sounds simple until the vocal feels buried, the bass disappears in the car, and someone suggests fixing everything “in the master.”
To make the boundary clear, let’s follow one vocal-led song. It starts as edited drums, bass, synths, and vocals. It ends as a final master. At each stage, we’ll track who receives what, what they can change, and when the song needs to go backward instead of forward.
Scene 1 — The rough mix turns separate tracks into a song¶
Recording and editing are complete. The lead vocal has been comped. Unwanted noises have been removed. The drums, bass, synths, backing vocals, and effects are all present in the DAW session.
The song is not mixed yet. But it has a rough balance.
A rough mix is a working version used to judge the arrangement, creative direction, and core relationships before final mixing. Mixing begins after recording and editing. The mix engineer combines the individual tracks into one coherent song. Those tracks might include separate vocals, drums, and synthesizers. According to iZotope, a mix session can contain anywhere from three to 200 tracks (source).
In our example, the rough mix reveals several issues:
- The lead vocal disappears when the chorus gets busy.
- The kick and bass compete in the low end.
- The synths crowd the center.

These are mix problems because they involve relationships between individual elements. The engineer still has access to every track, bus, fader, and automation lane.
Before final mixing, confirm that the arrangement is approved. Label the latest rough clearly. Collect feedback in one place. “Use the mix I sent yesterday” is not a version number.
Scene 2 — What the mixing engineer changes inside the session¶
The mix engineer can reach inside the song. That access defines the job.
For our vocal-led track, the engineer starts with fader balance. The lead vocal comes forward. The backing vocals sit behind it. The kick and bass are balanced so neither dominates the groove.
Next comes panning. This places sounds across the stereo field. The lead vocal and core low-end elements may remain focused, while selected synth and backing-vocal parts can occupy different positions. The goal is not width for its own sake. It is a clear arrangement that supports the song.
Equalization, or EQ, changes the frequency content of a track. It can remove unwanted sound such as low-frequency hum, adjust tone, and increase or reduce an instrument’s presence (source). Compression controls changes in level. It can keep a vocal more consistent or make a drum feel more forceful. The mix engineer may also use reverb, delay, modulation, and pitch effects on individual tracks. These treatments help separate parts or connect them within a shared space.
Automation handles changes over time. A vocal phrase can rise slightly at the end of a verse. A delay can appear on one word. A synth can recede when the chorus vocal enters. These are precise, local decisions.

The mix is ready when the musical relationships work. The vocal is not merely audible. It feels correctly placed. The low end supports the song. Effects have intentional starts and endings. The approved mix can now leave the multitrack session.
Scene 3 — The exact handoff: what the mastering engineer receives¶
Mastering begins after mixing is finished. The usual handoff is not the complete DAW session. It is the approved mix combined into one stereo file (source).
Send the mastering engineer a package that answers basic questions without starting an email excavation:
- The clearly named final mix version
- The sample rate and bit depth
- Relevant loudness or processing notes
- Reference tracks
- A concise description of the desired result
- Any approved alternate versions

Before uploading, run a preflight:
- Listen for audible clipping or distortion.
- Confirm whether mix-bus limiting is intentional.
- Leave appropriate headroom based on the engineer’s request.
- Check phase and mono behavior.

Do not send grouped exports and call them multitracks. Stems are combined groups, such as all drums or all backing vocals. Multitracks are the individual recorded or generated tracks. If you are unsure what the engineer requested, review what to send when someone asks for stems or multitracks.
Scene 4 — What mastering changes on the stereo mix—and what it cannot¶
The mastering engineer receives our stereo mix. The lead vocal, kick, bass, and synths are now combined. Moving one fader is no longer possible.
Mastering may involve broad tonal adjustment, dynamics control, limiting, and level optimization. It can also include sequencing and format preparation. The purpose is to bring the completed mix into a coherent final form, perform quality control, and prepare it for distribution across playback systems and platforms (Abbey Road, iZotope).
For our song, the mastering engineer might hear that the entire mix is slightly dark or that its overall dynamics need refinement. Those are whole-song observations. A broad adjustment can affect the combined mix in a controlled way.
But mastering is not a second mix.
If the lead vocal is buried only during the chorus, changing the entire stereo file may damage the surrounding instruments. If the kick masks the bass, the mastering engineer cannot independently adjust their faders in a stereo mix. If one backing-vocal consonant jumps out, that is better corrected inside the mix session.
The sensible options are:
- Approve a small whole-mix refinement during mastering.
- Return to the mix engineer for a track-specific revision.

Returning to the mix is not failure. It is using the stage that has the right controls.

Use the problem—not convenience—to choose the next step.

Stem mastering gives the engineer more targeted access than a single stereo file. It does not mean every element should be remixed. Send stems when the mastering engineer requests them or when the stereo mix has a specific limitation that grouped control can solve.
The decision rule is straightforward:
- Musical or track-specific problem: return to mixing.
- Small whole-song refinement: continue with mastering.
- Defined issue affecting a major group: discuss stems with the mastering engineer.

Scene 6 — The final master: compare, approve, and deliver¶
The mastered song returns for approval. Do not judge it only by switching rapidly to the louder file. Compare the mix and master at matched listening levels so level alone does not decide which one you prefer.
Listen on the systems you actually use:
- Studio monitors
- Headphones
- A phone
- A car system
Check the full song for:
- Vocal clarity
- Low-end translation
- Harshness or fatigue
- Mono compatibility
- New distortion
- Clean starts and fades
- Correct sequencing
- Correct metadata
- Consistency with other songs in the project
